Challenge
Expedia, one of the largest travel companies in the world, needed to migrate critical services and databases, but needed to do it with little to no disruption.
Result
In a multi-phased approach, Pariveda migrated mission-critical microservices and databases and was able to peel off small percentages of traffic over to the new environment to minimize risk to Expedia’s systems.
Impact
With Pariveda’s help, Expedia designed and implemented a migration to AWS (Amazon Web Services) with no downtime.
Expedia Group, Inc., headquartered in Seattle, is one of the world’s leading full-service online travel brands. The company owns and operates travel fare aggregators and travel metasearch engines, including Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Vrbo, and Trivago, among others.
The Challenge
Services and databases needed to be re-platformed to run in Expedia Group’s AWS environment.
As part of a corporate-wide initiative to focus its engineering teams on innovation rather than hardware procurement and datacenter management, Expedia Group chose to move most of its workloads to AWS. As one of the largest travel companies in the world, a significant challenge for the migration of critical services and databases was doing it in a way that had little to no downtime for their users.
Keeping the hotel booking services and database on-premises was expensive for our client. This migration was able to help them better manage their cloud costs and significantly improve the management and deployment processes for their tech stack.
The Result
How Pariveda helped Expedia migrate to AWS:
- A team of Pariveda consultants worked to migrate a set of mission-critical microservices and databases, which sat directly in the primary booking path. Downtime was not an option as the services and databases supported significant hotel booking traffic.
- The migration itself was multi-phased as the team worked to migrate the services and databases and refactor parts of the applications themselves to take advantage of AWS features and other Expedia Group tools and APIs that required changes in order to work in the cloud.
- Once the services and databases were re-platformed to run in Expedia Group's AWS environment, Pariveda was able to slowly peel off small percentages of traffic over to the new environment to minimize risks to the systems.
The Impact
Keeping the hotel booking services and database on-prem had been very expensive for Expedia Group. This migration helped them to better manage their cloud costs and significantly improve the management and deployment processes for their tech stack.
With Pariveda’s help, Expedia was able to execute a migration with no disruption to its critical services. The client now has a scalable, resilient lodging-and-booking system that supports its current needs. This foundational work will continue to help Expedia as the company looks at reducing costs, improving operating efficiencies, and positioning themselves better for the future.
Thanks to Pariveda, Expedia Group’s migration to AWS provided a lodging-and-booking system with long-term scalability and resilience.
