Lumity is a nonprofit organization that is building a future where STEM education is more equitable, accessible, and uplifting for under-resourced students in Chicago.
Opportunities in STEM are growing, but racial, socioeconomic, and gender equity in STEM education has fallen behind. Lumity levels the playing field by eliminating barriers to tech careers with their career prep and training programs; however, a technology gap was preventing them from scaling effectively.
The Challenge
Scaling a nonprofit education organization’s communication capabilities.
Lumity’s goal is to provide teens and young adults from under-resourced communities with transformational experiences to prepare them for lifelong careers in STEM. Lumity works with four high schools in the Chicago area to teach students valuable STEM concepts, introduce them to the working world, and then train them to enter the workforce in a variety of fields, such as manufacturing and software testing. In pursuit of this goal, Lumity hosts STEM lessons, career site visits, “one-day challenges,” and a variety of other events. Lumity’s previous process of organizing STEM-related lessons and events was mostly manual, with student attendance being tracked by hand and then transferred to an online database. Additionally, Lumity administrators lacked the ability to gather feedback from past events, making it difficult to improve their curriculum over time.
The Result
How the Pariveda intern team developed a scalable solution to simplify manual processes:
- Created both a mobile application for students and a web application for admins that were easy to use and could tackle both pain points simultaneously.
- Developed an admin portal that enabled the Lumity team to manage content and attendance, as well as create events and surveys, while the mobile app enabled students to check into events, submit survey entries, and receive general information about Lumity.
- Created the ability to effectively capture student feedback in order to iteratively improve their STEM education model.
The Impact
As a result of these developments, and using up to date technology that can scale into the future, the communications between Lumity’s administration and students has greatly increased. Administrators have more insight into the engagement of their programs, and students have a greater opportunity to involve themselves with these efforts to better their education.
In partnership with Pariveda, Lumity was able to scale their communications to help them grow and improve their programs for developing under-resourced students in STEM.
