When COVID hit, United Airlines was severely impacted as worldwide airline operations halted and growth plans paused. However, the company continued to move forward and used the hiatus as a strategic opportunity.Â

United Airlines, Inc., is one of the largest airlines in the world. It has the most comprehensive route network among North American carriers, a modern fleet, optimal hub locations, and approximately 70,000 employees spread across every U.S. state and in countries around the globe.
The Challenge
Creating a data-in-motion platform allows the airline to sense and respond to events in real-time.
United’s Operations teams knew that capturing and leveraging event data through a data-in-motion operational platform could be a strategic business enabler for the airline. Enhancements to the company’s proprietary platform targeted high-value business use cases: understanding the utilization of ground service equipment and other assets, seeing real-time geolocation data, and incorporating alerting into business events. This would allow United to make more informed decisions and increase operational efficiency—providing a better customer experience.
The Result
How Pariveda worked collaboratively with United’s engineering teams to leverage AWS:
- We developed and deployed new features to ingest additional data sources into the cloud data platform. The new data sources serve as building blocks that improve timeliness and accuracy of decision-making.
- Telematics data is unlocking key metrics and insights that were not available in the past that now give a real-time understanding of aircraft turns.
- We built additional features into the platform to improve maintainability and reinforce best practices.
The Impact
By providing increased efficiency in service operations, United Airlines reduced costs, improved the daily lives of agents and operators, and ensured flights were on time and properly serviced for customers.
In collaboration with Pariveda and AWS, along with future investments in the platform, United will continue to drive business value, provide better service, and put customers first.
Customer-first decision making is enabled by harvesting up-to-the-minute operational data.
